(Medical):Bohumil (II-ing) - he was sporty but always had a problem with his lower leg that he injured as a young man (late 20s). This injury from a dam at Zatka's factory-mill near České Budějovice never healed and resulted in forever open skin wound around his ankle ("bércový vřed"). This affliction progressed in his advanced age, eventually even weakening his shin bone which buckled quite a bit causing a slight limp (his late 60s and 70s).
In his middle age, he developed a duodenum ulcer that was operated on in early 1950s (Dr Polák, Praha-Vinohrady hospital). That way he lost half of his stomach and was left with a pronounced 20-cm long surgical scar on his upper abdomen.
Later in life, he developed the Parkinson's disease (his 70s of age).
After visiting with his son's family in Canada (Bohumil & Zuzana, London, Ontario) in 1973, he sort of gave up on life and his health generally deteriorated. He was hospitalized in early 1974 and he died in the hospital. There was no definitive cure for the advancing Parkinson's.

Visit:
The only 1 visit to son Bohumil (III) overseas in Canada. Foreign travel was practically impossible during the communist years in Czechoslovakia (1948-1989).

(Half-) Sister JARMILA (III) - Ajka (*1933-1984)
Ajka was 6 years older than me and always had a life, and friends, of her own. She was a cute, pretty blond, probably a little spoiled too. And quite of an unruleable spirit. School for her was a social affair, never mind exams - while intelligent, she barely squeeked through. Her partying and lose schedule was always a point of friction with parents. A 'free spirit' herself, she was going out with all kinds of 'free' artistic types. However, some of her boyfriends ended up as respected architects (Vejdovský), movie directors (Rychman) and such. When she came of age (18), eventually, she moved out and lived on her own. While always accompanied by prominent men, she married rather late to Karel KACHYŇA, a well-known movie director.
While Karel had a daughter from his previous marriage, they did not have any children together - only a series of revered dogs (dachshunds). Ajka was obviously a late bloomer - she very much came to her senses and eventually successfully completed a very selective and demanding training as an airline stewardess. With the Czech Airlines she flew all over the world at a time when hardly anyone was allowed to travel. They lived a good and busy life with Karel who was with her when she prematurely died of a lung cancer at 50 years of her age (1984). She was a heavy smoker -

Bohumil VOLESKY, Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, has been engaged in world-wide consulting activities, lectures and workshops. His areas of expertise are in Biochemical Engineering and Industrial Water Pollution Control. He obtained his basic training at the Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic, receiving the Dipl. Ing. degree in 1962. Following more than four years of industrial research and experience, he earned his Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, in 1971. He is the founder and a President of BV SORBEX, Inc., a new-technology venture commercializing the biosorption process for removal and recovery of heavy metals from industrial solutions which he has been pioneering in his research.
He held appointments as a Visiting Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland, at the University of Puerto Rico, and his major collaborative research activities included also China, Brazil, Korea and the Czech Republic.
His research interests and expertise are reflected in a monograph book on "Sorption and Biosorption" (2003), an edited volume "Biosorption of Heavy Metals", and in another monograph on "Modeling and Optimization of Fermentation Processes".

«/b»While I was a war-child, I had a good childhood as there was virtually no war-fighting in German-subdued Czechoslovakia. It was immediately after the end of the 2«sup»nd«/sup» World War that our family lost everything in the 1945 nationalization (expropriation) of industrial enterprises including my father's. All what 2 generations had built through hard work and perseverance - gone. Blessing in disguise - it perhaps made it easier for the family to squeeze through the brutalities that followed the 1948 totalitarian commie takeover.
I never thought that I could 'cohabitate' with the communists - they were just much too wrong to my feeling for justice. So, get away from them - don't be another generation sacrificed, my father just uttered. For 2 decades, the West was the dream for me - that eventually became doable as the commie totalitarian regime was wearing out.
I fondly look back at my time of studies, middle school and the Technical University ( ), that were reasonably easy for me. I managed to squeeze in a lot of sport and outdoor activity with a wonderful secret boy-scout group. Competitively sailing and white-water canoe paddling, with some skiing in wintertime too.
More than 2 decades went by and, in my mid-twenties (1967), I managed to organize a post-graduate study in Canada. That was the only way to fool the hard and suffocating Czechoslovakian communist regime of that time. I am still shaking my head over that Czech officialdom's permission that actually came through for those fully Canadian-sponsored studies - a sign of the tough regime starting to fall apart shortly before the "Prague spring of freedom" ?
Some battle with the Czech officialdom came later, however - as the Russian armies invaded Czechoslovakia and things got tough there. My wife Zuzana was left behind in Praha trying to finish her medical degree. Fortunately, bureaucracies have a way of defeating themselves and this is how she eventually obtained an unusual and silly 14-day permission to "go to Canada and get her husband back". Eventually, both of us together in Canada then, we could thumb our noses at the cruel commie system - to never return back to that "commie paradise".
And Canada is where we have been happily living ever after -
Completion of hard post-graduate engineering studies (1971, London, Ontario) was rewarded by a prestigious professorial job with McGill University in Montreal. That's where we settled down and daughter Monika was born in 1974, followed by son Martin in 1976. As years flew by - they both became successful grown-ups - and we are all still living in Montreal. The now-retired parents follow the sun every year to Florida, escaping infamous Montreal winters.
Life is good in the sunshine of the free world -

Přesto, že jsem " válečné dítě" měl jsem dobré dětství neb v Němci porobeném Československu nebylo velkých válečných bojů. Hned po válce v r. 1945 však naše rodina přišla o všechno při znárodnění podniků "klíčového průmyslu". Vše co pracně vybudovaly 2 generace mého otce a dědečka - vše pryč. V jiném pohledu je však možno i říci, že to mohlo ale být i jakési "skryté požehnání" protože to pomohlo rodině chuději ale bez větších úhon přežít brutalitu po komunistickém puči v r. 1948.
Nikdy jsem se ale nemohl smířit s komunisty - pro můj smysl pro spravedlnost byli prostě úplně "mimo". Pryč od toho - "nebuď další obětovanou generací", utrousil jednou můj otec. Po 2 desetiletí byl demokratický západ ale jenom snem - který však začal být uskutečnitelný jak se totalitární komunistický režim pomalu rozkládal.
V podstatě s dobrým pocitem se dívám na svá studijní leta, střední školu a vysokou školu (Technika - ČVUT) - studium mi šlo dobře a lehce. Věnoval jsem se hodně také sportu a aktivitám báječné (tajné) skupiny vodních skautů. Závodně jsem plachtil a pádloval slalom na divokých vodách (double kanoe) s lyžováním v zimě.
A tak uplynula 2 desetiletí, až se mi kolem mých 27 let podařilo vykorespondovat a zorganizovat kanadské postgradualní (doktorské) stipendium (1967). To byla snad jediná normálnější cesta jak prorazit ten dusivý komunistický sytém. Pořád ještě kroutím hlavou nad tím povolením od českých autorit pro studium v Kanadě - snad to bylo známkou už se rozpadávajícího sytému před pražským jarem 1968 ?
Potom mě však ještě čekala bitva s českými úřady po vpádu sovětských vojsk do republiky kdy opět režim přituhnul. Moje manželka Zuzana byla ještě v Praze, kde se snažila o dokončení svého studia mediciny. Naštěstí, jak se zdá, byrokracie si často najde cestu sebe sama porazit - a tak se stalo, že Zuzana dostala poněkud nesmyslné leč vítané povolení odjet na 14 dní do Kanady a "přivézt manžela zpátky". Takže když jsme byli opět oba pohromadě a v Kanadě, mohli jsme na ten nesmyslný režim už udělat jen dlouhý nos - a vůbec ani nepomyslet na nějaký návrat do toho "komunistického ráje".
A tak v Kanadě spokojeně žijeme až dodnes -
Po úspěšném ukončení obtížného inženýrského doktorátu (1971, London, Ontario) jsem dostal prestižní profesorské místo na Universitě McGill v Montrealu. Tam jsme se usadili a narodila se dcera Monika (1974), následovaná synem Martinem v olympijském roce 1976. A jak čas plyne, tak už z nich teď jsou úspěšní dospěláci - a všichni jsme v Montrealu. My rodiče v penzi teď vycestováváme z montrealského mrazáku za sluníčkem a trávíme většinu zim na Floridě.

I only have a flash memory of my younger sister Marie being born in Prague (1942) where we originally lived in Libe?. She was born in the 'sanatorium' in Praha-Podolí and had a problem inflammation of her navel for some time right after birth. Sister Marie was 2-3 years old when we resided in Konarovice. She was born cross-eyed and always had a problem with her vision, wearing thick glasses. When back in Praha, I went to the primary school in Vladislavova street (that moved into a closeby building in Charvatova street - which got demolished much later) and Marie attended a closeby school in Vojtesska street.
Marie fell in love with Vav inec BODENLOS (Lenci) and she was just waiting to turn 18 and married. Living in the shared family Ostrovní 12 apartment, they soon had a son JIŘÍ BODENLOS (*1962). For some reason that nobody in the family knows or understands, Marie insisted on a divorce immediately as Lenci returned from his 1-year military service - and never remarried again. Marie's son Jiří grew up with a single parent into a big stout man. However, throughout decades, Marie had a steady but married boyfriend in Ing. Luděk Zoch.

(Medical):MONIKA - she was born with a low functioning one of the kidneys due to a reflux into it. At the tender age of ~2 she was operated on (several times) at the Children's Hospital in Montreal in an attempt to fix the ureter tube closing. While not completely, it was successful. Monika grew up very sporty - a gifted swimmer, later she was doing competitive volleyball (McGill university team) and ice hockey (!).
When Lukas was born (2008), she almost died on delivery when the placenta did not detach properly. She lost a lot of blood.and her uterus had to be taken out - that much for more children !
Lukas was born fine - but he cannot have another true brother or sister.

Following a Montreal based medical specialty training (5 years) in Orthopedicsl, Monika works (2014) at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal.
