8 "These men went to Britain to fight because they couldn't stomach allowing their country to go to the dogs," said movie director Sverak. He sees his movie creation,  "The Dark-Blue World ",  as a chance to "celebrate the country's last heroes".
These include people like Ivo Tonder. When Germany annexed Czechoslovakia in 1939, Tonder made his way via Hungary and Turkey to Beirut, where he joined the French Foreign Legion. Later, via France and Spain, he arrived in England, joining the second Czech squadron, number 312, based at Duxford, which was equipped with Hurricanes and later Spitfires. He took part in the last days of the Battle of Britain before being shot down in a dogfight over the channel. His capture by a German float plane led to his imprisonment in Silesia. There he became the main tunneller in what was later immortalised as the  " Great Escape ". He was soon caught and sent to Colditz, which was liberated before the death sentence against him could be carried out.

12 (Medical):Medical Comment
The tragic and astonishingly similar fates of Julius [I] Kubert and his brother in law, JUDr
Jindřich Rychlík
, first husband of Olga Zátková, prompts me to digress once more in the
medical field. Both Julius [I] Kubert and Jindřich Rychlík died of tertiary syphilis, with the form
affecting the central nervous system, colloquially known as general paralysis or general paresis
(or palsy) of the insane. In this day and age it is easy to forget how devastating disease syphilis
used to be when no effective treatment existed, in particular in its tertiary forms. The disease
affected all strata of society. It was only with the discovery of penicillin in early 1940's, that
effective treatment became available. The insidious early stages causing no hardship for the
infected person may mask the disease until it explodes in the terminal devastating stages, which
affect various vital organs, including the central nervous system. The involvement of the brain
and spinal cord by the disease results in disintegration of the personality and to motor
dysfunction. The disease was not unlike AIDS in our day, before the discovery of modern antiretroviral drugs.
Typically, the disease carried away young men and women in the flower of their lives, leaving behind despair, shame and financial ruin of families. Perhaps the most painful for the families was the personality change of the unfortunate victims, which was quite common. This is what happened to these two luckless young men.
Julius [I] Kubert was 41, when the illness declared itself by his intellectual decline. He realized he could no longer cope with preparations of the examinations for staff officers. Motor dysfunction and personality change followed, the latter apparently for the better. According to Vlastislav, the illness transformed him into a meek, kind, patient and modest person. This only added to the pain of his close ones. He was discharged from the Army for the second time, this time for legitimate health reasons. He died at 43 after an accidental injury suffered under influence of the disease. Thus, he was mercifully spared of the disgrace of institutionalization.
JUDr Jind Rychlík, Olga's husband, became manifestly ill at 43 and died at 46. The similarity of the fates of the husbands of the two sisters gives an eerie sensation of the implacability of the hand of destiny. One must not, however forget that the disease was quite common in the upper middle class, and that the hypocritical prudish society is at least partly to be blamed for the spread of the disease amongst young gentlemen.
Bohumila never remarried. She devoted her life to her orphaned children. Her father August [I], who shared with her the guardianship of the children, was ever important in her life. Besides caring for her children, her greatest joy was continuous learning, which she never gave up. Her English and her French became so good that she won a contract for translation of Galsworthy's Forsyth Saga. She accomplished this literary success with a minimal commercial reward. Nonetheless, the income earned from her translation work helped her to buy a small house in Libni which gave her independence and privacy she yearned for. For the sake of sparing others she kept her sorrows, pains and disappointments to herself. Thinking first of others and sparing them of worries appears to be a pattern throughout her life. This included her health problems. Neglect of her own health was a luxury she could hardly afford, as her health had never been robust. Typically, she kept mum about her troubles till advanced, causing in the end considerable worries for her daughter Eva and her husband MUDr Hilar [II]  pi ka, who literally saved her life on a number of occasions.
At this point the Narrative ends. Because Bohumila ("bábuška") spent the rest of her life with her daughter's Eva family, she is well remembered by her grandchildren, who all keep fondest memories of her. I was fortunate that I met her and knew her, before and after our marriage with Diana.

RYCHLÍK, JUDr Jindřich (I1601)

14 (Medical):2014 narration from memory by Bohumil (iii) VOLESK , the grandson:
Grandpa VOLESKY was a gregarious, engaging and energetic person.
Sometime during his life he had an accident (not known to me) and one of his legs was a few cm shorter. As a result, he wore an orthopaedic shoe and he was  LIMPING.
His head was completely bald (don't know if he shaved some residual hair).
BOHUMIL and RŮŽENA lived in Praha-Karlín, Prvního pluku 18), on the corner of the main throughfare (Sokolovska), right by the elevated railway (viaduct)  where we visited them after the WW-2. They also had a summer retreat house in Klánovice u Prahy.
As very small children (BV = 3-6 years) we used to go there sometimes. I remember (BV-III) the garden with sandy paths which we raked in the pattern of 'parkettes' (zig-zag) with grandpa.
This is how I remember him -
In 1949 he fell and broke his hip - in his early 80s of age.
Staying in a hospital (Praha, sv. Ducha), he was immobilized in bed with a traction apparatus to fix the hip position. His leg was up in the air with a weight hanging on it - I was almost 10 years old, visited him there and remember -
In this situation he contracted pneumonia and died, rather quickly - a very common misfortune in those days of hardly any antibiotics and bed immobilization..
Also, losing his enterprise in 1945 must have been quite devastating for him.
VOLESKÝ, Bohumil Felix - komerční rada, továrník (I5)

15 (Medical):Bohumil (II-ing) - he was sporty but always had a problem with his lower leg that he injured as a young man (late 20s).  This injury from a dam at Zatka's factory-mill near České Budějovice  never healed and resulted in forever open skin wound around his ankle ("bércový vřed").  This affliction progressed in his advanced age, eventually even weakening his shin bone which buckled quite a bit causing a slight limp (his late 60s and 70s).
In his middle age, he developed a duodenum ulcer that was operated on in early 1950s (Dr Polák, Praha-Vinohrady hospital). That way he lost half of his stomach and was left with a pronounced 20-cm long surgical scar on his upper abdomen.
Later in life, he developed the Parkinson's disease (his 70s of age).
After visiting with his son's family in Canada (Bohumil & Zuzana, London, Ontario) in 1973, he sort of gave up on life  and his health generally deteriorated.  He was hospitalized in early 1974 and he died in the hospital. There was no definitive cure for the advancing Parkinson's.
VOLESKÝ, Ing. Bohumil (ii) - inženýr, továrník (I1)

16 (Medical):Died in Podebrady (?) of "old age" at 84 years old. She was always complaining of some health problems - excessively. She wore thick glasses. She was rather fat and slow moving - but lasted relatively long. MATOUŠOVÁ-BAYEROVÁ, Jarmila (i) (I8)

17 (Medical):It is not talked about - but Rudolph took his life by hanging himself in the forest at his home outside Georgetown, Ontario - Canada.
He was haunted by his forced military service during World War 2 - and late in his life developed a paranoia of being followed or rather hunted.
REINDL, MUDr. Rudolf (i) - physician (I586)

18 (Medical):Jarmila was quite chipper to her last year. She lived on her own in Prague (Liben, Ocelarska 9), was slim and elegant, walked well and her mind was in perfect shape.
For several decades she complained of not too good digestion, because of her gall bladder (but she had it taken out many years before !) - and so she maintained herself on a "light diet".
In summer 2005, she felt some digestive tract pains and a medical check identified pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, unoperable.
She was eventually committed into a hospice for terminally ill (in Praha-Bohnice).
Given anti-pain morphine, she slept a lot, did not eat and in 2 months lost weight and, eventually, quietly expired in her sleep on January 17, 2006.
She was cremated in a crematorium in Praha-Strasnice, the ceremony was well attended by relatives and friends. Son Bohumil's family (both grand-children Monika and Martin) arrived from Montreal, Canada.
BAYEROVÁ-JANDUROVÁ-VOLESKÁ-KORDOVÁ, Jarmila (ii) (I2)

19 (Medical):MONIKA   -  she was born with a low functioning one of the kidneys due to a reflux into it. At the tender age of  ~2 she was operated on (several times) at the Children's Hospital in Montreal in an attempt to fix the ureter tube closing. While not completely, it was successful. Monika grew up very sporty - a gifted swimmer, later she was doing competitive volleyball (McGill university team) and ice hockey (!).
When Lukas was born (2008), she almost died on delivery when the placenta did not detach properly. She lost a lot of blood.and her uterus had to be taken out - that much for more children !
Lukas was born fine - but he cannot have another true brother or sister.
VOLESKY, MUDr Monika Anna Eva - physician, orthopedic surgeon (I22)

20 (Medical):Narrated from memory by Bohumil(iii) VOLESKY, her grandson, in 2014:
RŮŽENA VOLESKÁ was a wiry woman, quite energetic and fit for most of her life.
Late in her life, she left Praha and moved in with her widowed daughter VĚRA Voleská-DOLANSKÁ who lived in Brno, Czech Rep.
As an old lady (her 80s ?) she developed a colo-rectal cancer and was operated on. She recovered well, however, from then on she was feable and had to live with a fecal bag.
Her son (Bohumil, II) died in Praha before her in June 1974 which was kept secret from her. She followed him shortly thereafter (1974-10-14) - died in a Brno hospital.
Unfortunately, I do not know the details as I was then already living in Canada (BV-III).

Grandpa (dědek) Vilém was a lanky, tall man walking with a cane. He wore strong glasses and suffered from cataract ("sedy zakal"). He had a mustache, chain-smoked and voraciously studied Czech history (Palacky).
He was of reasonable health and succumbed to a massive brain stroke sitting in a post office with his wife Jarmila, he just 'keeled over' - dead.

24 (Medical):She was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago and after having it removed followed by radiation and hormone treatment, we thought she had beat it.
However, in January this year (2015), it was discovered that the cancer had metastasized into her bones and brain. There was nothing that could be done.
ZÁTKOVÁ-DOUBEK, Vera Libuše - restaurant owner (USA) (I13)

25 (Medical):While he was only an occassional drinker during his life time, a liver failure eventually caught up with him at - a very advanced age. He died quietly of a surprising liver failure upon a short stay in a hospital in Babylon (Long Island), NY, USA. KORDA, Plk.

Očaroval ji zvláště jih Evropy '96 jižní Francie, Dalmácie, Korsika, Mallorca, italská Perugie a San Gimignano či Ibiza a Baleáry.

From Petr PETRIK: "FAMILY CHRONICLE: Family of Diana Špičková" :
Miloslava (Sláva) Zátková-Tonderová
(*February 2, 1884 in B - April 2, 1969 in Praha)
The second-born Miloslava married a well known Prague attorney JUDr Ferdinad
Tonder.
Dr Tonder happened to be a personal attorney of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand,
successor to the Austrian Imperial throne, who was murdered with his wife in Sarajevo on June
28,1914 .
A rather amusing story about the strikingly asymmetrical relationship between him and
his master is recorded in the Narrative. The Archduke made his mark in the history as a man of
"uninspired energy, dark in appearance and emotion, who radiated an aura of strangeness and
casted a shadow of violence and recklessness" (a quote from a historical document). From my
own reading I gathered an even less charitable portrait of the man. He had a violent temper,
which he was unable or unwilling to control, was cruel, pitiless, selfish and domineering, and on
the top of it he was very ambitious. The following story illustrates well some of these traits:
Ferdinad Tonder, already a middle aged gentleman, declined to sit down on the floor in the
Archduke's children's playing room, which lacked chairs, to discuss some business matters with
the Archduke. The Archduke flew in rage and chased the unfortunate Dr Tonder with a whip
through the castle Konopiště .
Miloslava studied painting with a famous Czech painter Antonín Slavíček. She had two sons with Ferdinad Tonder: Ivo and Hanno, both with reputation with a lot to be desired. Yet Ivo refuted this quick judgment by his heroism during the WW II. His remarkable story is recorded in a section devoted to the persecution of the family during the Nazi occupation. At the end of her life Miloslava lived with both her sons and supported herself by her art.

The ZÁTKA relatives
As it turned out, the Zátkas (the children Jaroslav II and Věra) were our closest relatives (the only first cousins to me). During the war, their parents were both arrested by the Germans in the sweep following the Heydrich's assassination 1941.  Grand-pa Bohumil (II) Volesky worked hard on having them released and eventually succeeded in liberating only father Jaroslav (I) ZÁTKA. Sadly, mother LIBUŠE VOLESKÁ-Zátková  never returned and perished in Osvětim (Auschwitz) concentration camp. They were not jewish at all - but the ZÁTKAs were targeted as an influential and patriotic south-Bohemian (České Budějovice) family.
While I encountered Jára and Věra on occasions in Praha, I did not quite know their father Jaroslav as he lived 'far away' in České Budějovice, persecuted further and hard by the communist regime that also confiscated all his large flour mill facility in Březí by České Budějovice.
My uncle Jaroslav ZÁTKA came from a well-to-do large and influential south-Bohemian family, owned and operated a large flour mill facility in B?ezi by České Budějovice.  He was quite a dashing but quiet character  - an avid outdoorsman and hunter, owner of a hunting lodge in the area of Užhorod (Transcarpathian Russia, east of Slovakia). When young, he was visiting Praha once, by chance encountered and totally charmed Libuše who was engaged to be married shortly. They eloped, went hiding for a while, emerging to get married soon in České Budějovice.

Společně měli dvě děti \endash  Jaroslava a Věru.

Masarykem.
Dříve nežli se rozvedli s Chvoščinským (1919), měli dceru Marii. Na přelomu 1920-21 si TBC-nemocná Růžena vzala Marinettiho "rudého" švagra, pro-bolševického novináře a člena socialistické strany Artura Cappu (1892-1973).
Růžena zemřela poměrně mladá na tiberkulosu 29. října 1923 v Leysinu ve Švýcarsku.
Pohřbena je na Olšanech v Praze.

From Petr PETRIK: "FAMILY CHRONICLE: Family of Diana Špičková"
Růžena ZÁTKOVÁ-CHVOŠČINSKÁ-CAPPA  (March 1, 1885 '96 1923)  -
was by all accounts unusually pretty and attractive young woman. While still a minor she fell in love with, and got engaged to Christian Losch, a scion of a wealthy Prussian family, who was a reserve Lieutenant in the German Imperial Army. The whole family was shocked. Her uncle JUDr August Zátka, who held a joint guardianship of Vlastimil's children together with their widowed mother, faced a major dilemma. August was a noble and an open-minded man and although he disagreed with the union, he did not want to stand in the way of a true love. He decided instead to give up the guardianship of Růžena. The planned union ultimately did not take place.
While visiting Venice, Růžena instead fell in love with a Russian nobleman Count Vasil CHVOŠČINSKÝ, a Russian attaché in Rome. The Count was an educated and   sophisticated man, coming from a fabulously wealthy family. Růžena converted to Russian Orthodox faith, and a wedding in this rite took place in Praha. She lived with Chvoščinský mostly abroad, surrounded by utmost luxury, rubbing shoulders with European aristocracy and even Royalty. She was a talented artist and pursued painting with success.
Unfortunately, she suffered of tuberculosis, and was taking many cures in the mountains and at the seaside. She succumbed to the desease in Leysin, Switzerland.
